Book Review: The Firethorn Crown by Lea Doue

Purchase HERE

Title: The Firethorn Crown

Author: Lea Doue

Series: Firethorn Chronicles #1

Genre: Fantasy/Fairy Tale Retelling

Audience: Young Adult

ABOUT THE BOOK

Princess Lily, the eldest of twelve sisters and heir to a mighty kingdom, desperately seeks a break from her mother's matchmaking. Tradition forbids marriage with the man Lily loves, so she would rather rule alone than marry someone who only wants the crown.

Fleeing an overzealous suitor, Lily stumbles into a secret underground kingdom where she and her sisters encounter a mysterious sorcerer-prince and become entangled in a curse that threatens the safety of her family and her people. Lily can free them, but the price for freedom may be more than she's willing to pay.

The Firethorn Crown, a re-imagining of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," is the first in the Firethorn Chronicles, a series of stand-alone novels inspired by fairy tales and other stories. Follow the sisters on their adventures in a land where sorcery is feared, women can rule, and dragons fly.

**5 stars**

Eeeeeee! I loved it! SO MUCH!

You all know how much I love retellings of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, right? Well, I realized I've read eight retellings of this classic fairy tale, and The Firethorn Crown by Lea Doue definitely ranks as one of my favorites. (It actually reminded me somewhat of Entwined by Heather Dixon, which is my favorite The Twelve Dancing Princesses retelling fairy tale of all time!)

Lily is the crown princess of Ituria, a land filled with dragons (big and small), overeager suitors, eleven younger sisters, and sometimes, unfortunately, ... sorcery. In hopes of evading a particularly annoying admirer, Lily and her sisters stumble into a dark trap that not only threatens their entire kingdom, but also further ensures that Lily cannot marry the secret love of her heart.

Fantasy mixed with fairy tale is perfection. Dragons and princesses? Excitement, action, and tender romance? Yes, please! ^_^ I loved the fantastical kingdom of Ituria and the twelve endearing sisters! Lily was sweet and brave and lovely ... trying to do the right thing amidst brutal circumstances. She does her best to be strong, and also realizes that oftentimes we need our family and friends to stand alongside us. All the younger sisters were interesting and humorous and cute. I just adore tales like this! One of the reasons I love The Twelve Dancing Princesses so much must be because of all those sisters! (I'm an eldest sister myself ... have four younger sisters.) So yes, I just related to Lily in some ways and loved her character!

In fact, all the characters in The Firethorn Crown were delightful! Excepting the villain and some of the overeager admirers, that is. Three young men in particular, (you'll know who they are) were completely lovable and perfect and endearing and sweet and strong and protective! *all the heart eyes* I love these big brotherly characters who care so tenderly for the twelve sisters! It simply delights my heart.

Yes, yes. Can't say enough for these lovely fictional peoples. Fantastic job, Lea Doue, in your character-creating and world building! I was swept away ... kept on the edge of my seat ... intrigued and breathless ... muchly concerned for my dear characters ... and finally, satisfied and happy! ^_^ And, I had to chuckle many a time! *grins*

There was no Christian allegory/symbolism to speak of, but Lea Doue is a Christian and I felt there weren't any elements to be concerned about in her book. Besides some edgy gowns that the sisters are forced to wear, and sorcery being wielded by the villain (who also gets a little too close to Lily—but no kissing), I have no other cautions. I would recommend to middle to older teens and adults who enjoy this type of book.

I am utterly intrigued by this tale, and can't wait to continue the FIRETHORN CHRONICLES with The Midsummer Captives!

Lea Doue, you offically have another fan! Thank you for writing such amazing fairy tale stories!

Title: Love Me Tender

Author: Janice Hanna

Series: When I Fall In Love

Genre: Historical

Audience: Young Adult

ABOUT THE BOOK

As "Love Me Tender" plays in the background, Debbie Carmichael determines to salvage her family's restaurant, Sweet Sal's Soda Shoppe, when her father's health fails. Teen heartthrob Bobby Conrad agrees to perform at a fundraiser concert. But just two weeks before the highly publicized event, Bobby backs out of the benefit.

Enter Johnny Hartman, a young, unknown singer to take Conrad's place. Debbie soon realizes the twists and turns leading up to the concert are divinely orchestrated. And it isn't dreamy Bobby Conrad who has stolen her heart—but the tender love of Johnny Hartman.

**5 stars**

This book was so cute, I think it deserves five stars! ^_^ I don't read much books from this era, but it is certainly enchanting! From poodle skirts and Sweet Sal milkshakes to starlets and Elvis Presley's "Love me Tender", this book made me feel bubbly and smiley. It just has a captivating touch.

Journeying with budding star singer Johnny and small-town waitress Debbie was extremely fun. I got the inside scoop on all the "Hollywood Heartthrobs" from back then; and also watched these two, dreamy young people realize what was truly most important in star-crowded California.

Not a novel to miss! Love Me Tender was like going to the beach with a strawberry milkshake and watching an era passed play before your eyes.

Book Review: King's Blood by Jill Williamson

Title: King's Blood

Author: Jill Williamson

Series: The Kinsman Chronicles #2

Genre: Fantasy

Audience: Adult

ABOUT THE BOOK

Jill Williamson's Fantasy Saga Continues!

In the second volume of Jill Williamson's Kinsman Chronicles, a remnant has escaped the destruction of the Five Realms and now lives on several hundred ships adrift at sea. As a flock, they sail north into the unknown in hopes of finding land that might become their new home.

As the king's illness worsens, Sar Wilek takes authority over the expedition and struggles to rule the disjointed people, while assassination attempts, vicious serpents, and dark magic endanger his life.

One prophecy has come to pass, but another looms dauntingly in the future. Who is this Deliverer? And if the Magonians have him, what might that mean for the realm of Armania?

~ MY REVIEW ~
**5 stars**

King's Blood releases into the world, as epic and complex as book one in THE KINSMAN CHRONICLES by Jill Williamson. I can't tell you how excited I was for this book—to return to the amazing characters and incredible fantasy world. Holding this enormous, thick, beautiful novel in my hands at last was like, ah, perfection! *grins*

But oh, my heart is bleeding ...

Brothers Wilek and Trevn, and all the other survivors of the Five Woes, have taken to the seas. They live day by day upon ships, searching for land while evading attacks from those who wish evil upon the royal family.

This book is thick, and the story has such depth, so it took me awhile to get through it. But I loved every moment of it! It was so delightful to return to its pages. As I read King's Blood in the quietness of night, I fell into the tale, feeling as though I were walking about the ships with Wilek ... laughing at Trevn and Mielle ... slightly freaked out over Charlon and all her crazy schemes. I don't know—it just swept me away.

I must say, I've come to quite love Lady Zeorah. Her story with Charlon ... heart-wrenching! I think I cried. Charlon, you better have taken something away from that wretched situation! Turn to Arman! Hinck, the spy, was interesting to read about. I was very nervous for him at times! Oh, and the prophetess! She continues to intrigue me.
Wilek and Trevn are, of course, my two favorites when it comes to the POV characters. And I adore Lady Zeorah and Mielle (though I don't believe the story is ever told from their point of view). The two romances blossomed so sweetly! Ah, I loved those bits so much! Wilek and Trevn's romantic relationships differed from each other, but they were both so uniquely beautiful. I especially adore Trevn and Mielle together. ^_^ Just can't say enough about those two romances. *wink*

Which brings me to my bleeding heart!! Not to give away spoilers, but that ending tore at my heart. Peoples, it brought tears to my eyes. Ultimately beautiful, but oh so hurtful.
King's Blood brings not just a few shocks and tragedies.

It was definitely fun to see similarities between this book and the BLOOD OF KINGS series by Jill Williamson. Since King's Folly and King's Blood's characters are the ancestors of the characters from the BLOOD OF KINGS series, we start to see familiar things pop up in this book, such as bloodvoicing, a gift to those of royal blood. Anyway, it was very neat, and I look forward to reading more!

I also loved how this whole tale mirrors the account of Noah and the flood from The Bible; or the Israelites being led out of Egypt, looking for a new land; or even the early settlers of America. Loved it!

Jill Williamson does such an amazing job with her descriptions. You can picture everything; the details sweep you away into this captivating world. And speaking of worlds, Mrs. Williamson also does fantastic world building! And crafts incredible, complex, interesting, real characters! Eep! I have not read many novels that tug me into their pages like these ones.

So many things happened! Personally, and in the big scope of things. Some happenings thrilled me ... other incidents horrified. Still more broke my heart. But overall, I can say King's Blood was an epic fantasy—a thrilling journey from beginning to end. I can hardly wait for the third book to make its way to my hands! (At least a cover, please? *winks*)

As a cautionary note, King's Blood is definitely for an adult audience. There are a few mature elements, though tastefully done. A fair amount of violence and gruesomeness throughout the book.
The biggest thing would be that the villains wield dark magic, sometimes doing spells and whatnot. Most of the time Jill Williamson doesn't detail this too much. The good people have a range of gifts, given to them by Arman (the one true deity in this fantasy world—represents God), one of them being bloodvoicing. There are also "root children", who have special abilities. All of it felt in its right context to me (there is a clear line between "light" and "darkness") but if you are uncomfortable with fantasy magic, this may not be a book for you.

I received a copy of King's Blood from Bethany House Publishers.

The Songs, Movies, and Books Tag

I was tagged by Sam @ Books and Arrows for The Songs, Movies, and Books Tag. This definitely looks fun and I'm excited to do it, so let's get on with the answers! *smiles*

(If you haven't been on Books and Arrows at sambookarrow.blogspot.com, it features book posts, fun tags, movie talk, and more. Check it out!)

1. A song that describes you in some way

Hmm, I don't know. I suppose I'll go with this song by Kari Jobe; because it's often, in my anxiety, that I need to call out to God to steady my heart.

Steady My Heart by Kari Jobe
" ... lover of my soul, healer of my scars. You steady my heart. "

2. A movie that inspires you

Lots. ^_^ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe {2005} and War Room {2015} are two that really stir my soul. Catching Fire {2013} is one that inspires me to write because there's so much complex emotion.

3. A book that the main character is like you

I'm going to say Azalea? She's the eldest sister in a fairy tale/fantasy novel called Entwined, by Heather Dixon. There are many elements about her that I feel I can relate to. (It's an amazing read, by the way. Read my fangirling review HERE.)

4. A song that you love

Idols by Jessa Anderson

O'Lord by Lauren Daigle

5. A movie you love

Love's Enduring Promise {2004}. ^_^ Willie and Missie! <333 Western/prairie romance. Family drama. Faith. Kind of a "coming of age" story for the sweet Missie Davis. (Just a side note, if you haven't read the "Love Comes Softly" series by Janette Oke, you must! ^_^)

6. A book you love

Whoa, what kind of question is this, Sam??? *winks* Alright, how about I pick a favorite "historical read" and favorite "fantasy read" from last year? Sound like a plan?
Historical: The Reluctant Duchess {Ladies of the Manor #2} by Roseanna M. White
(Read my review HERE)

Fantasy: (okay, this was harder than I thought. Let's just go with this one. Though Samara's Peril, Defy, and King's Folly are saying this is totally not fair. *winks*) A Branch of Silver, A Branch of Gold by Anne Elisabeth Stengl
(Read my review HERE)

7. A song you do not like

Um, I don't really know. Some of the secular songs I unintentionally hear are annoying.

8. A movie you do not like

There are a couple movies I can think of that I highly dislike, but I don't even like to talk about them because they affected me so negatively. (I cried myself to sleep after watching one of them! O.O)

Some other examples are those low-budget Christian movies that are just cheesy, historically inaccurate, and have really bad acting ... yeah, they aren't even worth watching in my opinion.
(But then there are INCREDIBLE independently-filmed Christian movies, such as War Room, October Baby, Beyond the Mask, etc.)

9. A book you do not like

The Siren by Kiera Cass

10. A song that makes you happy

Fireflies by Owl City. It has more of an upbeat tune, and just reminds me of certain happy times in my life.

Sparrows by Jason Gray

11. A movie that freaked you out

Well, I generally don't watch movies that freak me out. I will say that The Jungle Book {2016}, while fantastic, was really intense! That tiger sure freaked me out! Meep!

12. A book that made you cry

Anything by Anne Elisabeth Stengl, for sure. And I know there's been many others, but I just can't think of them right now. I love books that make you cry tears of happiness, or tears because your soul was so very touched. ^_^

13. A song you listen to a lot when you were younger

Wee Sing Bible Songs. ^_^ And Third Day, Newsboys, and some country songs because my dad listened to them.

14. A movie you watched a lot when you were younger

How young are we talking? When I was around 8-10 years old, I really loved Felicity: An American Girl Adventure (still do! *grins*) and Little House on the Prairie.

The only movie I remember re-watching and re-watching is Mr. Frumble's New Cars and the like. Haha! *grins*

15. A book you read a lot when you were younger

The Hardy Boys by Franklin Dixon, Nancy Drew Mystery Stories by Carolyn Keene, and Sisters in Time (by various authors). I read through the whole Sisters in Time series more than once.

16. A song that irritates you

I really don't know, haha! I only listen to music I enjoy. I guess sometimes I hear songs at stores that breed discontentment or give me a yucky feeling inside because of the words or tone ... and that irritates me ... that people feel the need to blare such stuff in my ears!

17. A movie that kept you on the edge of your seat

Probably The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. It's been awhile since I watched it ...

18. A book that left you breathless

Entwined by Heather Dixon, Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson, Aire by Lena Goldfinch, A Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers, Golden Daughter by Anne Elisabeth Stengl, To Darkness Fled by Jill Williamson, and Black Tiger by Sara Baysinger ... to name just a few. *winks*

"A Quiet Extrovert"

I like people. I'm an introvert—oftentimes insecure and socially awkward. Have a hard time talking in front of crowds or being the center of attention in general. But ...

I love meeting new people.

I long to make new friends.

I adore big gatherings—where I'm surrounded by people (and at least one trusted friend) but am not pressured to be involved. I can visit at my own pace.

I am thrilled when I talk to random people in town; it makes life feel interesting and full of hope.

I thrive on devoted relationships and deep conversations.

I've done quite a few personality tests, one of which is found at 16personalities.com. There I was labeled "TheAdvocate", an INFJ personality. An introvert. But interestingly enough, people with this personality type are often known as "quiet extroverted types".

I'm very passionate about books, writing, and literary characters; and I need my own space sometimes, but ... I feel I will wither up and die inside without real companionship and community.

While living on the west coast, a distant cousin approached me wanting to form a friendship. I was actually a little amazed that she wanted to get to know me; and delighted, of course! We got together several times and talked easily, having lovely times. Even though I think we were both pretty nervous to meet each other in person!
Later, I met one of her nieces at a young people’s event. We talked the whole evening about blogging, writing, and different topics—and I thoroughly enjoyed myself!
Then I met three more of her nieces (we’re all around the same age, more or less) and had an absolutely amazing time visiting with them.
I was surprised and quite happy to find out how much I had in common with all five young ladies, and it was just so fun to get to know them and start forming friendships. I had so missed that companionship—having people who actually understood certain trials you were going through, struggles you faced, or quirks you just thought no one else could relate to! *smiles*

Another moment that stood out to me while living on the west coast was when another one of my cousins quoted to me from one of my favorite books (one of her favorites too!), when I was sick. I always find myself remembering that particular happening because it felt very special to me, what with how important books are to me. For me, it was a moment of true connection and friendship. ^_^ Peoples, when you connect with me through books, it means a lot. *smiles*

Currently, I’m back at my family’s house with my parents and siblings. I do miss my older brother, relatives, and new friends on the west coast, but it feels right to be where I am at this time.
  • Investing in the lives of my six younger sisters & brothers.
  • Talking and spending quality time with my mom.
  • Devoting time to my writing project.

But I struggled for many weeks, wondering about finding that companionship outside my family here. And guess what? I felt the faithfulness of God last Saturday when my mom, sister, and I met with another mom and her oldest daughter (from my family’s homeschool group). We sat at Chick-fil-A eating waffle fries and drinking half-unsweetened-tea-half-lemonade (*wink*), and talking for hours. Talking about books, and other such things, mind you. *grins* After that visit, I felt more refreshed and hopeful than I had in a long time.

And, I’m planning to go to Bible study at my family’s church for the first time. I’m really excited!

So what is the point of this post? Well, I suppose to just give you a little glimpse into my life, and thoughts, and feelings.

And let you know that I love to connect with you! Having a blog has been such a blessing, in that I get to bond a little bit with so many readers and writers and other such folk!

(Share my blog with others! *smiles*)

So, I am an introvert—but I love people. Companionship means everything to me.
