Doings of 2016 Thus Far

My dear readers, it's been a long time since I've done a "doings" post, so I thought I'd bring you one today! A little update on my life in the year of 2016, thus far.

Well. I suppose we can go back to April, which was when my older brother and I stuffed his car with some of our belongings and headed out into the great unknown. Okay ... not the great unknown, but actually our childhood home - the state we grew up in. Which happens to be across the country from where our family currently resides.
(Found on Pixabay.com)

So I moved out. It was about a three-day road trip. It wasn't bad at all, considering we stopped at our aunt & uncle's house the first night, and a hotel the second night. By the third evening, we had reached out destination! (Wow. Was it really that long ago? It seems like just yesterday, that road trip ... or many, many years ago.)

In July, a family reunion was scheduled to happen at my grandparent's lovely home. So my whole family flew out and it was so good to see them after being gone for three months (the longest I'd ever been away from them!) I got to hug everyone and talk to them face-to-face, and snuggle my two-year-old baby brother! <3 It was the most fantastic time, having my mom and six younger siblings out here for a whole month! (My dad came out for a week before flying back for work).
(This is me and my little brother at a beach)

Oh, I should note that I finally got my first car, and have a small cleaning job! (Still searching for a steady job!)

It was a good summer. Lots of family time. Meeting new people. Making friends.

The day before my family left to go back home, in August, I headed out to a young people's gathering with a bunch of other people. My sixteen-year-old sister was able to come along instead of flying home! *grins* It was great! Except ... the road trip was EXTREMELY long. 30+ hours? No hotel stops. A couple breakdowns. Yes. We had a few fifteen passenger vans, and two of them decided now was the time to break down.
Nevertheless, we still made it there and had a fun time (despite being exhausted). More meeting new people! ^_^
(Wandering around the grounds)

I did lots of canning, drying, freezing, and pickling this year! *grins* We froze strawberries, canned peaches, dried plums, pickled cucumbers, froze blueberries, canned pears, dried herbs, pickled beans ... Oh, and made applesauce. Etc. It was rather enjoyable. And I remembered how much I LOVE strawberries ... *wistful sigh* There's nothing like freshly picked strawberries.

The month of October, I did a "healing-your-stomach" diet, which required me to eat simply meats and vegetables. After about four days, I was able to add in a fruit.

Now that it's November, I'm finally able to add in things like eggs, almond flour, almond milk, honey sunflower butter, CHOCOLATE (just a little!), and things like that. Yay! *smiles* I'm trying not to add in too many things at once, but Thanksgiving is coming, you know, and I want to be able to eat all that yummy food! ^_^
Well, most of it. I still can't have wheat, dairy, or peanuts (and trying not to have cane sugar), "healing-your-stomach" diet or not!

Are you excited for Thanksgiving? Take time this week to think of the blessings in your life! Praise the Lord! ^_^

What else?

  • Every Monday, from August 1st until yesterday, I did my Hidden Gems: Authors You Need to Discover blog series. If you missed any of the post, click on the link to review! *smiles*
  • I finished my rewrite of Silver Rose! It's now 161,569 words. (Considering its word count used to be 187,233, I'm pretty pleased.) SUPER excited about the possibility of publishing in the near future. I sent it off to some people to read ... if you are interested in beta-reading Silver Rose, email me at swordmaidenofthelight (at) gmail (dot) com, and I will consider you! Otherwise, I can contact you for advance-reading later.
  • I've cautiously starting working on Diamond's Quest {Called to Light #2} again. This is my third time starting over with writing it. Hopefully I got a plot that will stick finally!
  • I won a lot of books these last two months! From authors such as S.D. Grimm, Lisa Tawn Bergren, Connilyn Cossette, Lena Goldfinch, etc.! Check out my Youtube channel for more on that!

  • What am I currently reading?
A Lady Unrivaled {Ladies of the Manor #3} by Roseanna M. White. I love this Edwardian series!

And planning to read Anomaly {Anomaly #1} by Krista McGee, Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay, and Dawnsinger {Tales of Faeraven #1} by Janalyn Voigt next.

  • What am I currently watching?
Hmm. Nothing much. I've been watching season two of Poldark (which has some skip-worthy scenes, just so you're aware); but the last episode infuriated me so much! Not sure what to do about this.

I'm very much looking forward to Beauty and the Beast {2017} and Ballerina {2016}
(Note: If you have any clean dance movies to recommend to me, please do!!)

  • What am I currently listening to?
I usually wait until after Thanksgiving to listen to Christmas music, but yesterday I started listening to Lauren Daigle's Christmas album on Youtube, and she has a couple gorgeous songs on there (such as 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas')! This isn't part of her album, but I love this song she sings called Noel (perhaps by Chris Tomlin?). It's absolutely breathtaking.

Anything more to say ... ? Nothing much, I suppose. But I have some exciting new blog posts coming up, so stay tuned! ^_^

Has the Christmas season feeling hit you yet?
How has the year of 2016 been for you so far?
Do you do canning?

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag 2016

Hey, my lovelies! I was tagged by the wonderful Deborah O'Carroll for the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag! I'm quite excited to do this post because ... books! I love tags having to do with them! *grins*

Yes ... we are halfway through the year! Can you fathom it?? I'm doing well with my reading challenge - I've read 68 books so far, and I'm hoping to have read 120 (at least) by the end of the year! So I'm eight books ahead of schedule! ^_^

Now for the questions ...

Best Book You've Read So Far in 2016:

Hey, that is an impossible question! I'll pick 7 favorites instead ... The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson, Entwined by Heather Dixon, King's Folly by Jill Williamson, Samara's Peril by Jaye L. Knight, Defy by Tricia Mingerink, Waking Rose by Regina Doman, and When Dream Come True: A Love Story Only God Could Write by Eric & Leslie Ludy.

Best Sequel You've Read So Far In 2016:

Ah, I'm going to go with Waking Rose by Regina Doman. It's the sequel to The Shadow of the Bear and Black as Night, and I absolutely loved it! It tied up the first three books of the A FAIRY TALE RETOLD series very nicely.

New Release You Haven't Read Yet But Want To:

A Branch of Silver, A Branch of Gold by Anne Elisabeth Stengl, Honor Redeemed by Christine Johnson, and Fading Starlight by Kathryn Cushman (to name just three. *winks*)

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year:

The Silent Songbird by Melanie Dickerson, The Lady and the Lionheart by Joanne Bischof, and A Time to Rise by Nadine Brandes.

Biggest Disappointment This Year:

Season of Glory by Lisa Tawn Bergren, I guess. I loved the first book in the series, but the second two just weren't so much my thing. *sad face* I know a lot of other people who really liked them though!

Biggest Surprise:

The Mountain Midwife by Laurie Alice Eakes, perhaps? First off, I was surprised that it was contemporary, having automatically guessed it to be historical. And secondly, I was surprised how much I loved it, since I'm usually not that in to contemporary novels. It was so good! ^_^

Favorite New Author of 2016:

Hmm ... speaking of new-to-me authors, I'm going to say Chuck Black and Kate Breslin.

Newest Fictional Crush/Ship:

Fish and Rose from the A FAIRY TALE RETOLD series by Regina Doman! Love them!! <3 And they get their story in Waking Rose.

Also, Jamie and Brandi from THE BLADES OF ACKTAR series by Tricia Mingerink. Because ... they're perfect for each other. Now we just have to wait for them to grow up! *grins*

Newest Favorite Character:

Okay, I really, really liked Princess Winter from Winter by Marissa Meyer. Everything about her is just so adorable, and heartbreaking, and beautiful, and dear ... all wrapped together.

I also love Rose from Waking Rose. She, along with her older sister, Blanche, are like, the best! Rose is just a fairy tale princess in the modern-day world. ^_^

Book That Made You Cry This Year:

Black as Night by Regina Doman, because the ending was so adorably precious. It touched my heart. Beautiful romances do that for me. ^_^

And When Dreams Comes True by Eric & Leslie Ludy. Because, another incredibly beautiful romance! And even more beautiful, this amazing love that God has for us! I'm His princess ... that makes me cry.

Book That Made You Happy:

Well, Samara's Peril and Defy made me happy, because ... stuff with the characters!! ^_^

A couple other books are Home of Our Hearts and One More Wish, books #2 and #3 of the CHRISTY & TODD: THE MARRIED YEARS series by Robin Jones Gunn. Just ... Christy and Todd. And all their friends. And the life happenings. I loved them!

Favorite Book To Film Adaption You Saw This Year:

I really enjoyed The Jungle Book {2016}. It was intense, but very intriguing and just overall a fun movie to watch! *smiles* (... Not sure how closely it followed the book.)

Additionally, I quite liked Alice in Wonderland {2010}, which did not come out this year ... and I've never read the book ... But anyway, I did rather like the movie! It was strange, but somehow delightful! ^_^

Favorite Post You Have Done So Far This Year:

Hmm, let me think. Here are a few fun posts, and heartfelt posts that I did this year:

Most Beautiful Book You've Bought So Far This Year:

I don't have a camera on hand at the moment, so I'm just going to share my latest Book Haul video from Youtube! *grins* Lots of gorgeous books in there! ^_^ Some of my favorites (speaking of beautiful books) are Samara's Peril, Millie's Unsettled Season, Beyond the Valley of Thorns, and A Memory Between Us.

What Books Do You Need to Read by the End of This Year:

Erm, hundreds upon hundreds! Hehe! XD To name a few that I haven't already: Kingdoms by Carolyn Ann Aish, To Get to You by Joanne Bischof, Luther and Katharina by Jody Hedlund, The Fragrance of Geraniums by Alicia G. Ruggieri, Courageous by Dina L. Sleiman, Mardan's Anointed by Kathrese McKee, Kingdom's Dawn by Chuck Black ...

And I TAG ...

YOU! Whoever you are, reading this, if you are a blogger, please consider yourself tagged! If you want to be, of course! ^_^ Make your epic Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag post and leave the link to it in the comments below so I can go read it! *smiles*

Have a wonderful 4th of July, everyone! Happy Independence Day!

Dear Future Husband ...

Dear Future Husband,

I want to apologize. To say sorry for making it all about me. Perhaps it's a girl thing—to think when there is a young man who catches our notice: Maybe he's the one. Could he be my prince charming? –Come to rescue me. Fulfill me. Make me happy. Call me beautiful. Make me secure. Complete me.

Me. Me. Me. I'm sorry. We shouldn't always do that. I shouldn't do that. When we see you, we should see a child of God. A young man treasured by the Creator. A temple of the Holy Spirit. A brother. Possibly a friend. Who knows—perhaps more in time? But right now, we should just see you. Not someone who could potentially fulfill all our "happily ever after" dreams, but a fellow human being who has struggles, hurts, and hopes, and needs encouragement and love, just like we do.

I’m sorry. The burden I oftentimes subconsciously plan on putting on you is ridiculous. There’s been hurt in my life, but I cannot put my hope in you to make it right. You can’t fulfill me. You can’t right my world. After all, you are only a man. A good man, I am sure, but a man, nonetheless. Not a god. In fact, because of your sins, God had to sacrifice His Son, Jesus Christ, to save you! The story is the same with me. So, as two imperfect, broken human beings, how could we possibly be able to fulfill the other?
I need to stop having this unhealthy expectation of you, and start putting all my hope in the Lord. Because if I went into marriage like that, it would cause intense unmet expectations and pain and strife. But if we come together, both keeping God as our first love, and placing Him in the center of our relationship, then perhaps it could be something immensely beautiful.

It isn’t all about me. It’s about you. And most of all, it’s about God, and honoring Him in everything we do! Dear future husband, if God plans to bring you along sometime, I want our friendship to encourage and bring joy to the both of us. I want our love story to be beautiful, for me and for you—like God designed the love between a man and a woman to be. I want our marriage to radiantly glorify Him. He is worthy! And His path is very good.

So, I want to do better. For Him. For you. For me.

Faithfully Yours

~ Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 ~

~ My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Psalm 62:5-8 ~

Reflecting on the Year Gone By and Looking Ahead

The year 2016 has come. My family didn't do a big party for New Year's Eve, but we did have yummy snacks and root beer floats while chatting, laughing, and looking through old photos (some of ancestors who lived long ago; which is always so intriguing!). It was a very lovely time with my parents and siblings! ^_^

I don't generally do "new year resolutions" or get all excited about a shiny new year! (Maybe I should try harder to ... ) But it is kind of fun to mark books on Goodreads as Books-I've-Read-In-2016 now! *grins* I know I'm strange. You don't have to continue reading my blog, you know. Haha.

When I ponder on it, there is something hopeful about starting a new year. Like some things might be different this year. Exciting happenings may occur. Perhaps this is the year that you'll ...
And it is helpful to reflect upon the year gone by.

2015 was a fairly eventful year for me! In January, I was in Minnesota (which my family had just moved from a few months earlier) with my older brother, at our cousin's wedding! A fun little trip!
I started baking more, gluten-free and sugar-free ... trying out fun new recipes. I actually found a lot of tasty snacks that I really enjoy! Such as Chocolate Oatmeal and Easy Banana Pancakes! http://shantellemaryh.blogspot.com/p/health-foods.html
In March I went with three of my younger sisters to watch Cinderella {2015} in theaters! Just had to mention that memorable event. *grins and winks* It was lovely sister time! <3

April, I made a Facebook Author Page! That was an exciting day! I also added A Dream Not Imagined to Goodreads, set up a Twitter account, and the like. Getting ready for my publishing journey! Meanwhile, my fourteen-year-old sister was busy drawing the cover for my soon-to-be first published work.
May 28th, I officially published the kindle version of A Dream Not Imagined ... a novella I had actually written and entered into a contest at least a year before. All polished up and sporting a beautiful cover, it was offered to the world! Soon after, in June, I got the paperback version out.
I was hugely supported by family and friends, with encouragement and amazing book reviews flooding in! There was definitely some stress, but ultimately, this was one of the loveliest times of my life!! Thrilling, and beautiful, and quite simply a dream come true. Something I had talked about since I was about ten-years-old had come about ... One of my stories was published! What a feeling to hold my very own book in my hands! I still sometimes pull A Dream Not Imagined off the shelf (mine or the family bookshelf) and this incredible feeling of giddiness and joy fills me - just seeing my words in print. My story in its own cute little book.

During June and July, I very much enjoyed short visits from cousins and friends out of state.
Come August, my older brother and I were headed for Minnesota again. We attended a young people's gathering called Watersmeet, which was a delightful experience! I got to see so many people (relatives and friends) from lots of different states! So enjoyed it. My brother and I proceeded to stay in MN for about the next two months! I got to visit my old library a lot, play Ultimate Frisbee & disc-golf, watch War Room {2015}, go on a beautiful camping trip, and just hang out with really awesome friends. It was simply the best to be part of my old Bible study group once again.

I had a very wonderful time there; but then it just came the time to head home. And I can't deny it, I was missing my family. Just had to give that irresistibly sweet baby brother of mine a big squeeze! <3 <3
During October, I got to be part of a Book Launch Team for the first time! It was such a neat experience! Yay for author Nadine Brandes, her amazing dystopian books (A Time to Die and A Time to Speak), and her willingness to let me be on her team! *smiles*
Also got to be part of one of my favorite authors, Tricia Mingerink's, launch team as well, soon after that.
Some of my favorite people came to visit from my home state, which was sooo lovely!! Now I just want to go visit them for a (long) while.
And December was a sweet and cozy month of Christmas music and family and happy little things. I celebrated my 19th birthday on the seventeenth, with my family and chocolate cake! *smiles*
We made a gingerbread house ... family time! <3
And had a lovely Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with family, and eating yummy food and opening sweet little gifts from each other.

Reading.

I found a lot of fantastic NEW (to me) authors to follow this past year! Gillian Bronte Adams, Nadine Brandes, Angie Brashear, Christine Johnson, Kathrese McKee, Tricia Mingerink, Rachelle Rea, Shonna Slayton, Ashley Townsend, Mary Weber, and Jill Williamson all delighted my reader self in 2015, and I can't wait to pick up more of their books!

And I read more novels from some of my favorite authors such as Lori Benton, Serena Chase, Melanie Dickerson, Jaye L. Knight, Anne Elisabeth Stengl, Sarah Sundin, and Jan Watson. Amazing authors, all! ^_^

Some books I hope to read in 2016 are:

Movies.

I was blessed to watch some amazing Christian movies such as War Room {2015} and Beyond the Mask {2015} this past year! I also enjoyed Cinderella {2015}, and tv shows like When Calls the Heart {2014-}, Poldark {2015-}, and Call the Midwife {2012-}.

Some movies I hope to watch in 2016 are:

Writing.

I published a novella. I wrote a little. I rewrote a little. I edited a lot. All in all, I don't feel very accomplished in my writing of 2015. But, I really hope to finish re-writing, and editing, and polishing my fantasy story, Silver Rose, this year of 2016!! Perhaps another book published? *hopeful look*
I also would dearly love to began re-writing an old historical story that I wrote when I was about 12/13. It's about a girl named Ruby Jens, and ... I don't know. I just love it for some reason, and would very much like to rewrite and publish someday! ^_^

**********************

So, we shall see! Most of all, my hope for this year is that I will be brave enough to surrender all to the Lord, and go wherever He guides me! May we all be in the center of His will this year! <3

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."
Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV
